Curivari Buenaventura BV 500 Quickie Review

Curivari Buenaventura BV 500 (5 1/4 x 50) - Quickie Review

The latest release from ultra-boutique Nicaraguan cigar company Curivari, the Buenaventura, has come in and man do they look good! So good in fact I decided to go ahead and try out the BV 500, which is the smallest of the three sizes in the line. This Nicaraguan puro stays close to the Curivari style of looking extremely Cuban packaging wise, with an excellent throw back band with a little bit of an updated twist. What really pulled me in was the oily, uniform chocolate colored wrapper. The cigar is just slightly box pressed. The Buenaventura took to flame like a champ and provided a near perfect draw. The cigar is well packed yet ample plumes of smokes come from every draw. The initial flavors are very grounded with earthy, cocoa notes, very balanced to start and a solid medium body in the strength department. About halfway through a baked bread flavor combined with some unidentified sweetness is very prominent. One thing that consistently blows me away about Curivari is the company's ability to create such complex Nicaraguan cigars, with unique and interesting flavors, at absolutely great prices. The BV 500 goes for approximately $5 bucks, a killer deal when taking the great construction and flavor of this cigar into account.. As the cigar moved on all the aforementioned flavors melded together into a extremely smooth, enjoyable medium body Nicaraguan cigar. I've had maduro cigars that were less sweet, rich and chocolatey… Overall great smoke, great price.. Comes highly recommended! We also carry two other sizes, the Buenaventura BV 560, which is 5 1/2 x 56, also the BV 600 which is a 6 x 60 Gordo. Thanks for reading!

Perdomo 20th Anniversary Sun Grown Epicure Review
By GC
8/27/2012 4:17:00 PM
*Sorry for the hiatus in reviews last week, there was a bug going around the office… Our palate's are back up and running, look out for more IPCPR Release Reviews this week:

Perdomo 20th Anniversary Sun Grown Review

Perdomo 20th Anniversary Sun Grown Epicure (6 x 56)

The Perdomo 20th Anniversary cigars are rolled exclusively with tobaccos grown on Perdomo's numerous farms in Esteli, Condega, and Jalapa Valley, Nicaragua. The 20th uses the highest primings to deliver a rich, complex flavor profile, and is available in both Maduro and Sun Grown wrappers. The wrappers are hand selected, aged for a minimum of 6 years, and then fermented for an additional 14 months in Bourbon barrels. This an extremely special Nicaraguan Puro from the Perdomo family, a representation of all of their farms coming together to create a wonderfully balanced premium cigar.

Appearance / Pre-light:

The cigar is a beauty. The sun grown wrapper is almost completely veinless and ultra smooth to the touch. The leaf color, especially for sun grown tobacco, is especially light with no blotchiness, consistent in color all the way through. It is extremely well rolled with near unidentifiable seams and an absolutely perfect cap. The cigar has a "slight" press, making it into more of a rounded-rectangle shape than a square. The band kind of reminds me of an Opus X for some reason, possibly the shape and detail put into the design. I clip the cap off easily, the pre-light draw is excellent, the open draw reveals some salty spice mixed with a cocoa sweet tobacco flavor.

Perdomo 20th Anniversary Sun Grown Review

First Third:

As I touch flame to cigar the first few puffs are accented with a spicy blast of flavor. The smoke output is excellent and the draw is open but not too much. After a few minutes and a few more puffs, I realize very quickly this is a complex cigar. There is a wonderful creamy sweetness on the finish intermixed with some floral flavors to go along with an earthy tobacco flavor, which seems to be increasing in depth. Although 56 is about as large as a ring as I like to smoke, the "slight" press of the Perdomo 20th gives it an easy going mouthfeel that does not get uncomfortable. So far the best way to describe this cigar would be to call it very classy. It's extremely well made with wonderful burn and draw properties. While the flavor profile is very complex and multidimensional, you don't have to be an aficionado to pick out the flavors. The cigar is very balanced and well blended, and the finish is superb. So far a phenomenal Anniversary cigar for Perdomo. As the first third comes to an end, the spice is ramped up a notch, and the cigar hits solid medium body territory.

Perdomo 20th Anniversary Sun Grown Review

Second Third:

The 20th Anniversary Epicure continues its smooth delivery of a variety of flavors, with more rich, leathery earthiness upfront, and while the sweetness is there it's taken a back seat. One thing that is mostly agreed upon regarding Perdomo, especially among regular smokers, is that next to Padron, they create one of the most consistent Nicaraguan cigars on the market. I would bet that once I'm done with this cigar, if I sat down and smoked another, the experience would be nearly the same. As someone who smokes a lot of cigars, consistency is something I absolutely cherish in the cigar world. It takes skill and a certain amount of determination by a company to create cigars that offer up the same qualities time over time. I just wanted to commend Perdomo for that, the brand sometimes flies under the radar so to speak. If you haven't I'd give Perdomo cigars a try, and this is a great place to start. The 20th Anniversary is a shining example of their ability to take tobacco from all of their many fields and create a solid, flavorful stick for a great price. At this point I had to remove the band because it was fairly wide. The second third continues on with an excellent combination of all the flavors I've previously mentioned in an expertly blended balance. The rich, creamy smoke has such an enjoyable sweetness to it, and the retrohale just the right amount of spice. I'm getting a very savory, salty taste in my mouth as the the smoke settles, causing my mouth to water a bit, and naturally cleanse my palate.

Perdomo 20th Anniversary Sun Grown Review

Final Third:

I've had to touch up the cigar a few times, but that's what a lighters for, and this Perdomo seems to be all about flavor, which is far more important then a perfect burn. Like I mentioned before, this cigar will easily satisfy a casual smoker or beginner. For someone with an advanced palate, if paying attention you will be able to hit most areas of the flavor wheel, from spice to salty to sweet, leather and earth, vegetal and floral. The depth here is striking and entirely enjoyable. The cigar is still burning smooth, and despite coming to the end is still burning cool. The final third is showing some sweetness once again in the foreground that mixes well with the salty finish. Hopefully the Maduro wrapped version of this blend shows the same complexity of character, I don't see why it wouldn't being that the wrappers were both treated to the same aging and fermentation process. After smoking this guy, the Maduro is definitely on my list of cigars to smoke. We've maintained a medium body throughout the cigar here, edging up right against the fullest side of medium, bordering on medium - full. The Perdomo 20th Anniversary Epicure, which is 6 x 54, was a very slow burning smoke, clocking in over 2hrs.

Overall, as you can tell by the review, I very much enjoyed this cigar. This is exactly what a celebratory Anniversary cigar should be. The construction was spot on, the burn and draw properties were great, and the flavors were rich and complex. The Perdomo 20th Anniversary will be available in 5 sizes, and will be in stock soon. Check back for stock availability, if you do not get our emails, make sure to sign-up below to be notified when new product comes in!

Thanks for reading..
Keep on smokin~

Rocky Patel Winter Collection 2012 Robusto
By GC
12/15/2011 3:57:00 PM
Background:

The latest in Rocky's Seasonal selections is the Rocky Patel Winter Collection 2012 (also known as the Winter Blend). This year's cigar sports a dark Ecuadorian Habano Wrapper with a dual binder from Costa Rica and Mexico, and fillers from both Panama and Nicaragua. An interesting blend with tobaccos from more than 4 countries. Let's see how it stacks up to the successful 2009 Rocky Winter Blend, and if it feels like a Winter cigar..

Rocky Patel Winter Collection 2012 Robusto

Construction / Prelight:

This 5 1/2 " box-pressed Robusto is a very attractive smoke. The aroma that comes off the cigar when you take it out of the cellophane is mouth watering! The dark reddish brown Ecuadorian Habano wrapper is smooth and oily. The construction is great, the cigar is well packed, with no soft spots to speak of. The pre-light draw gives a sweet spice mixed with tobacco profile. Can't wait to fire this one up.

First Third:

Right off the bat, Rocky's New Winter Collection gives a great blast of flavor and a TON of smoke. The cigar starts off with a leathery sweetness with some peppery spice and a nice clean finish. Although well packed the draw is a tad on the loose side, making an average puff fill the air with clouds of aromatic smoke. I've had to touch up the cigar a bit with my lighter to keep it on the straight, I'm attributing the wavering burn to the looser draw. The cigar has a dark chocolate, espresso sweetness reminiscent of the Casa Magna Domus Magnus and a slight cedar or oak profile. These flavors continue on throughout the first third with excellent balance.

Rocky Patel Winter Collection 2012 Robusto

Second Third:

Onto the second third, the leather and earthy flavors are in the forefront, mixing well with the rich sweetness of the blend. The body is medium at this point, possibly a little stronger, but nothing too wild yet. The 2012 Winter Blend has a ton of character, a very enjoyable combination of flavors that are bold and mix well. I think the cigar does a good job of being a "winter" batch. Its richness and bold flavor, combined with a long finish gives the Rocky Patel Winter Collection 2012 a true winter feel. I could definitely see myself lighting one of these up after a heavy holiday feast, a perfect topper to a belly warming meal.

Rocky Patel Winter Collection 2012 Robusto

Final Third:

All the draw and burn issues I was having at the start of the smoke have worked themselves out. The cigar basically just corrected itself and started to burn near perfectly. The body and spice have picked up in the final third, I'd say the body has easily reached medium - full. The sweetness that was initially in the forefront of the profile has dropped off into the distance. The earthy core of the cigar continued to play out until I nubbed it.

Rocky Patel Winter Collection 2012 Robusto

Overall:

I was a big fan of the 2009 Rocky Patel Winter Blend, another bold blend with a PA Broadleaf Maduro wrapper. I think Rocky has succeeded in creating a similar bold and flavorful (heavy) Winter Blend, but with it's own character. What this blend lacks in complexity and elegance it makes up for with a boldness of flavor. A great medium to full cigar loaded with a unique flavor that while not varied, is balanced and very tasty. As all seasonal blends, the Winter Collection is limited, so grab yours while you can! Only 2000 boxes of each size were made this year.

Hey everyone,

Hasn't been many reviews lately, chalk it up to general craziness and business around the offices here at Atlantic Cigar.

Lots of new releases have been rolling in recently... always make sure to check the What's New section of the website.

The Carlos Torano Vault Humidor / Corona Gorda Combo -

The Carlos Torano Vault was released a little while back, we tried it and found it to be a great cigar. One of the best from Torano in a long long time! We finally got these beautiful Vault Humidors that come preloaded with a limited Corona Gorda size Torano Vault Humidor.

Curivari Seleccion Privada Maduro -

Curivari Seleccion Privada Maduro Cigars are the latest release from the 2011 IPCPR trade show. The Curivari Cigar Company produces outstanding ultra boutique cigars with Cuban like flavor profiles while using all Nicaragua tobacco. The Curivari Seleccion Privada Maduro blend is a rich Spicy full bodied cigar with loads of flavor. These had a major buzz at the show.. we're all a huge fan of the regular Seleccion Privada, to top it off with a Nicaraguan Habano Maduro wrapper just might bring this cigar to the next level.

New Cigars From Gurkha!

Gurkha Cellar Reserve Cigars

The Gurkha Cellar Reserve Cigars were first released at the 2011 IPCPR trade show as a brick and mortar only cigar. The blend is comprised of the finest quality 15 year-old aged tobacco, finished with an oily Nicaraguan Criollo 1998 wrapper, that combines an aged Dominican, Olor binder holding together 15 year old Nicaraguan Criollo filler. The Gurkha Cellar Reserve cigars are a medium to full bodied smoke with complex rounded flavors that pick up in strength as it smokes down.

Gurkha Royal Challenge Cigars

The Gurkha Royal Challenge is another cigar released at the 2011 IPCPR, which just recently landed in stock. This medium bodied cigar boosts a golden silky Ecuadorian Connecticut shade grown wrapper. The blend is comprised of both Dominican and Nicaraguan fillers bounded together with an Honduran Habano wrapper. The result is an ultra smooth cigar with a nice complex flavor profile.

New Cigars In Stock!
By admin
10/19/2011 3:18:00 PM
Lots of great new cigars out this week! New Brands that just landed and are ready to smoke:

Aging Room Small Batch M356

- These Dominican beauties are created by Oliveros for Rafael Nodal's Habana Cuba Cigar Co. The brand is getting a lot of attention as of late due to some extremely high ratings in Cigar Aficionado. A complex, medium body cigar that's full of flavor and extremely enjoyable to smoke. The Presto Size is reviewed below in detail. These are "small batch" so they will be limited.

Rocky Patel Fifty

-
After working on the blend for over four years, Rocky Patel has released the "Fifty", an ultra-premium cigar to celebrate his 50th birthday. The Fifty sports a dark Ecuadorian Habano wrapper hand selected from the top of the plant, the 7th priming. The double binder and secret blend of Nicaraguan fillers give the Fifty a rich full bodied character with complex flavors of peppery spice, dark chocolate and espresso. The packaging is very well done, with a limited edition decorated and numbered box. Give us a call or check our retail stores for more information: 1 (800) 877-7877. You can also email us.

Farmer's Select Nicaraguan Bundles

- We all know the economy isn't looking all that great these days, everyone is trying to save some cash here and there. We wanted to find a great Nicaraguan cigar that had all the usual qualities, some spice, a nice medium to full body, earthy tobacco flavors, etc.. at an everyday smoke kind of price point. With that in mind we did some digging around and came up with the Farmer's Select Nicaraguan. Because we import them directly and skip the flashy packaging, we're able to cut out the middle men, and deliver a 5 or 6 dollar cigar for half the price. Created in a small factory, these small batches are made with the same premium tobacco that are in your pricier smokes. Try them out, we think you'll be glad you did. All bundles are under 40 bucks.

Sencillo Black Cigars by Prometheus

Sencillo Black Cigars

- Sencillo is a project created by Keith Park and Prometheus. Last year's Sencillo was blended by Christian Eiroa of Camacho Cigars. This year Keith Park teamed up with the Plasencia family to create the Sencillo Black. The 2011 blend has more Nicaraguan tobacco to give the cigar a fuller bodied profile. Handmade in Nicaragua, Park created a blend made up of five different tobaccos that come together very well to create a balanced, tasty smoke.

E.P. Carrillo Edicion Limitada 2011 - Dark Rituals

- The latest and third E.P. Carrillo Edicion Limitada released is a beautiful dark Oscuro Maduro dubbed "Dark Rituals". The Carrillo family's cigars just keep getting better, and the Edicion Limitada's are really something to covet. Blended with an Ecuadorian Sumatra binder and Nicaraguan Fillers, the Dark Ritual is a pretty large smoke, (6.5" x 56) and is encased in a dark, rich Oscuro Maduro wrapper. The cigar comes in boxes of 10. Only Carrillo Sr. could blend such a complex, full body and full flavor masterpiece. These cigars are no joke, forget about the single sticks - we haven't had something more box worthy in the shop in a long time! Like all Edicion Limitadas, the quantities are limited so hurry up!

La Gloria Cubana Artesanos Retro Especial Review
By GC
9/30/2011 12:03:00 PM

Background:

This is an interesting new project coming from Team La Gloria set for release in September of 2011. The La Gloria Cubana Retro Especial has been in the works for almost 8 years now. The brand was inspired by an antique humidor found at the El Credito Cigar Factory. Team La Gloria wanted to replicate the Retro look of the humidor. It took them two years to finally get the retro feel of the packaging just right. Each frontmark has a unique design and a classic name taken from the old days of El Credito. The cultivation of the cross-bred Connecticut seed grown in Honduras to create the beautiful wrapper that encases the cigars. The cigar features a double binder of bold Nicaraguan and Mexican tobaccos and a filler made up of proprietary blend of ligero and Nicaraguan and Dominican tobacco.

Appearance and Construction:

This new cigar from La Gloria Cubana, the Artesanos Retro Especial has a really nice looking, rustic, toothy golden brown wrapper on it.  I am reviewing the Club size which is a 5 3/4" x 47 ring gauge. The cigar is very firm and seems to be packed very well. The band gives the cigar a very Retro feel, which is what they were going for and was executed very well. One clipped the cold draw, while a bit tight, gave off somee nice earthy tobacco flavors.

First Third:

The Retro Especial starts off mild-medium with some welcoming earthy flavors, some spice, and an underlying sweetness. The draw gives off just the right amount of resistance and the burn line while wavering a bit, is pretty official. The ash is very dark and almost black where it meets the cigar. The flavors in the first third are already fairly complex. For some reason this cigar reminds me of Fall as I smoke it. The aroma is an Autumn spice with a young tobacco scent.

Second Third:

The Retro Especial Club is building in strength, body and spice as it moves into the second third. Strength wise this La Gloria Cubana is still medium in body, with clean mouth feel and a long finish. A nutty, dry flavor mixed with something earthy, possibly a woodiness, (cedar maybe?), moves into the cigar's complex array of flavors. There is something here that is reminiscent of some Cuban cigars that I have smoked in the past. It's not that twangy taste, but more of the vegetal youngness, it's enjoyable with this particular cigar because it seems to be very much balanced. I think the La Gloria Retro Especial will have some really great aging potential, even a few months in the humidor could do wonders here.

Last Third:

The earthy cedar flavors are definitely in the forefront as the cigar takes its final stand. In the background is a nice creamy sweetness, kind of like a caramel or coffee flavor. The last third of the Retro Especial is really enjoyable.. The strength of the fillers and binders have ramped up a bit to blend perfectly with the unique flavor of the hybrid wrapper. With a little left than an inch left, the cigar became a little bit too hot for my liking. Usually due to my smoking too fast.. Total time smoking this Corona Gorda was over an hour and a half.

Overall Impressions:

I'm not sure if it's the unique wrapper leaf, the interesting mix of fillers and binders, or all things considered, but this La Gloria has some serious character. Lots of complex flavors matched with an interesting aroma and perfect draw and burn. Team La Gloria definitely has an interesting product on their hands here. I can't wait to see the finished packaging, I think it's going to be a real eye catcher. It's good to see a big company like General Cigar create something with some boutique type qualities to it. While I'm sure they will be making a good amount of these babies, the cigar looks and generally performs like a smaller batch cigar. Perfect for Fall, this one will be arriving in our Retail Stores and online very soon within the next week. Keep your eye's peeled!

*UPDATE: These are now available in our retail stores and online in the Brand page section of La Gloria Cubana Artesanos Retro Especial.
